FAQ

Why study neuroscience?

Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary field. It combines aspects of physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology, computer science, and even philosophy. Simply put, there is something in it for everyone. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, neuroscience can be applied to many levels of many career paths, including medicine, research, education, psychology, law, engineering, and public policy. Fifty million Americans have neurological disabilities, and one in three Americans will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime. Understanding the mechanisms behind these diseases will help us develop better prevention strategies, treatments, and cures. The brain is the most complex and mysterious organ in the body. It is involved in every human endeavor and is the seat of our emotions, actions, memories and perceptions. By understanding its function, we can gain important insights about ourselves and about humanity.

How do I become a member?

Show up to any of our two monthly general meetings and sign up!
ACTIVE MEMBER REQUIREMENTS: To be considered an active member, 15$ in dues are required per semester in addition to 10 hours of NSA-sponsored activities per semester. These hours may come from meetings, journal clubs, volunteering and social events. Please only sign up for volunteer events if you are sure you can go, and contact us at least 24 hours before if you have to cancel or we will deduct hours from you.

ACTIVE MEMBER BENEFITS: Active members are allowed to run for officer positions, receive exclusive NSA shirts, invited to the annual banquet and field trip to the Perot Museum, and more! But really, you're surrounded by neuroscience enthusiasts, what more can you ask for?

VENMO: @UTDNSA

Do I have to be a neuroscience major to be a member?

Not at all! We welcome all majors and many of our members study psychology, cognitive science and biology.

We value diversity and encourage anyone who is interested in learning to join our family.
